What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when someone asks you “Do you like Damien Hirst?”

If you love contemporary art, you may think about Young British Artists and the Nineties in the UK.
If you, again, love both contemporary art and its market, you’ll have one and the only image in your mind: The $12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art by Donald Thompson.

Impossible not to mention the popular cover of this book: a shark preserved in formaldehyde in The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, one of the most iconic masterpieces by the Damien Hirst.

In the end, if you love contemporary art, its market, and cryptocurrency, your mind will take you to his latest series of works: The Virtues, famous even before its publication as the artist himself let people inside his studio through Instagram stories.

His use of Instagram, even if unconventional for an artist of his caliber, isn’t the main reason why we’re here, because there’s another one — and it’s much more interesting.
But before moving on, let’s talk a bit about this series of masterpieces.

What does The Virtues mean?

Let’s start from the beginning.

In the 1900s Nitobe Inazo wrote the book Bushidō: The Soul of Japan, a study of the way of the samurai code of ethics called Bushido for Western audience.

According to the author, the Bushido code is made of 8 virtues, responsible for customs such as behaving a certain way, like staying calm even when a person is in danger, or the tea ceremony.

Bushido is a sort of behavior manual about Japanese nobles and their ways to face both daily and vocational lives.

Nitobe organized this code in eight virtues. Each of them is responsible for a kind of customs, like tea ceremony or tranquillity even in the face of danger.

What’s the main purpose of this book? To unveil the cultural similarities between the two worlds and their cultures, because according to Nitobe’s “there is no East nor West as far as human beings are concerned”.

The whole series made by the artist has broken the sale record of 22million $.

If you read this until now, you can understand why we are so thrilled about this artworks.
